Qualifications of an Awesome Solar Installer

NABCEP Certified PV InstallersAlways Hire a Licensed, Bonded, and Insured Contractor

Homeowners who hire electricians or solar installers that are not licensed, bonded, and insured put their homes and their wallets at risk. The moment an uninsured electrician steps on your property, you assume any responsibility for any injury that occurs while he (or his staff) is working on your property. Proof of liability insurance protects you and your home.

A license ensures that the electrician you hire has the skills, knowledge, and experience required to perform the job you hire them to do. Many homeowners are taken advantage of by unlicensed contractors who perform sub-par work or abandon the job before it is finished. Why Hire a NABCEP Certified Solar Installer

In the state of Arizona, solar installation is considered electrical work so solar installation must be done by a licensed electrical contractor. There is currently no state law that requires solar installers to be certified specifically to install solar.

The North American Board Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) certification distinguishes highly skilled solar installers from electricians. It is the gold standard for board certifications in the renewable energy industry. Solar Array on New Build Homes

NABCEP certification requires years of experience, expert knowledge, and months of study. Applicants must pass a rigorous exam that covers the breadth of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to competently design, install, and maintain a variety of PV solar systems. The exam evaluates the applicant’s knowledge on subjects such as analysis of energy production and demand; system design; Jobsite safety; electrical, roofing and construction practices; and troubleshooting and maintenance. NABCEP certification is a voluntary and pain-staking process undertaken by only the most skilled and dedicated solar experts.

Installers must recertify every three years, during which time they are required to earn continuing education hours in renewable energy and business-related areas including building codes, fire codes, solar codes, and national electric codes. Additionally, a NABCEP certified installer must maintain an ongoing decision-making role in solar installation projects.

NABCEP certification provides the measuring stick against which solar customers can measure the competency of solar installers. Ask your solar provider for proof of NABCEP certification.
