Know Your Solar

ANSWERS TO ALL YOUR QUESTIONS

How long will it take?

There are many moving parts with Engineering, Permits, and Utility approval. If everything goes right you will be making your own power in about 8-12 weeks.

Why microinverters over optizers?

Microinverters allow more flexibility when it comes to designing your system. With lower maintenance, better reliability, and 25 year Warranty. If you decide to add more solar panels or battery backup microinverters make that a lot easier.

Which rate plan do we suggest for your solar?

APS and SRP have a few rate plans, we will guide you to the best plan that fits your lifestyle and usage needs.

How long will I be without power?

Installing solar does not require your power to be turned off as our experienced electricians are able to install a new breaker without shutting down your main breaker. However, if your project requires a new or upgraded electrical panel, this may require a full day shutdown.

When do the tax credits end?

Solar rebates and incentives vary depending on where you live. The most significant is the 26 percent federal investment tax credit (ITC), which allows you to deduct 26 percent of the cost of your solar energy system from your taxes. Some states offer additional tax credits, and certain municipalities and utilities also offer cash rebates or other incentives.

A How long will it take to see a ROI?

Typically we are seeing 6 to 9 year payback periods and this will only decrease as utility rates rise.

Will I still have power if the utility grid goes out?

Not with your typical Solar installation. However, if you install an accompanying generator or battery technology, you will be able to have power when your neighbors don’t!

A How long will it take to see a ROI?

Depending on your family’s usage and size of your Solar System you will start seeing your power bill go down right away. A full ROI payback can be between 8 & 12 years.

What does De-rating my electrical panel mean?

It allows us to accommodate your new Solar System without overloading your electrical panel. With Larger systems this is required for the safe of home. right away. A full ROI payback can be between 8 & 12 years.

Are Battery off grid systems good to have?

These are great to have if you live in a location where there is no utility service. If you live in a home fed by the grid, the grid is always the best and more affordable option second to solar.

Can batteries help me save money?

Yes, they can save you money, but can also provide peace of mind… There are only a few scenarios where batteries make sense. Batteries are great if your utility company has a high demand charge structure. Another scenario would be if you have any critical power needs such as life saving equipment.

What brand of solar panels do you use, and why?

We use Q-Cell modules because of their reputable brand, product quality, and having years of experiencing no issues we have proven these to be the best value for your investment.

How much maintenance is required on the panels?

The great thing about Solar Systems is that there are few things that need to be maintained. We recommend having your Solar panels cleaned once or twice a year. Having an inspection done every few years is also a good idea.

How do I know If I need to upgrade my Electric panel?

There are a couple of reasons a panel upgrade might be needed. One would be a safety or electrical hazard, another would be if you needed more space or a larger buss rating. We evaluate each Home or Building on an individual basis.

How long do solar systems last?

Solar systems have been known to last more than 50 years! All of our products are warrantied for 25years  and will produce for much longer.

What if my roof isn’t good for solar?

We will be the first to let you know and go over your options. We have put together some great options for clients using patios, gazebos, and other ground mounted systems! We work closely with some great roofing contractors to upgrade the roof when necessary. We also have some ground mount options if there is enough space.

What if I’m not using electricity when the system is producing power?

All of the utility companies have a net metering system. This allows you to produce electricity and send it back to the grid and then get credits from the utility to use at a later time. So you can produce during the day when you are at work and then use those credits when you get home in the evening. APS and SRP give you a credit for every watt of power you make towards what power you use. All the extra power you make over what you use is credited to your next month’s bill.

How do solar systems work?

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels absorb the sun’s energy throughout the day and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. Most homes and businesses run on alternating current (AC) electricity, so the DC electricity is then passed through an inverter to convert it to usable AC electricity. At that point, you either use the electricity in your house or send it back to the electric grid.

Who does the install?

We do! We are electricians and do all of our own work. We never subcontract anything we are licensed to do. In fact, you are required to be licensed to install what you sell!

How long has Redline been in business?

Joshua Farley, the owner, has been in the electrical industry since 1992 and started Redline Electric & Solar in 2009.

How large of a solar system do I need?

This depends on your goals and which utility you have. We will work with you to size your system properly. As we design your solar system, we look at your lifestyle and power usage. We also look at your roof to see how many Solar Panels will fit. The ideal system size is 85%-115% of your yearly power usage.

How do you map the progess of an install?

We know this can be a long process and provide all of our clients with updates weekly and communicate every step of the process.

How do solar panels attach to the roof?

We only use the best products for our installations. We use Unirac Pro Series racking with Unirac Flash lock (shingle) and Quick mount (tile) tile hooks that get directly attached to a main rafter.

What if roof repair is needed?

No problem. Our systems allow us to remove part or all as needed. Depending on the scope the price to remove and reinstall will vary.

Can the solar panels be moved to a new home?

Yes you can! You can also leave it on the home as a benefit to the potential buyer. The National Renewable Energy Laboratories (NREL) showed that homes with solar sell 20% faster and for up to 17% higher! Studies have shown that homes with solar energy systems sell for more than homes without them. However, your property value will only increase if you own, rather
than lease, your solar panel system. In most parts of the country, going solar will actually increase your property value more than a kitchen renovation.

What is the difference between a Solar Loan & Lease?

With a loan you own the Solar System and you get all the tax credits. With a lease the Solar
company owns the panels and gets the tax credit. When the loan is paid off you owe nothing. A lease you may have a balloon payment. If you sell your home with Solar loan you just pay off the balance of the loan. With a Solar lease the new homeowner must qualify for the lease, if they don’t it can slow down the sale

How do we keep pests from getting under my Panels?

We have an awesome product called SolaTrim that not only keeps the rodents out it looks great also!

What will it cost each month?

The easiest way to find out how much you pay for electricity (and how much electricity you use per month) is to take a look at your utility electricity bill. We can help you read your power bill.

Will the electric bill change?

Unless your solar energy system includes battery storage and you are fully off the grid, you will still receive a bill from your utility. However, you can dramatically reduce your bill, or even cut the amount you owe to $0, with a solar panel system that matches your energy use.

What is net metering?

Net metering is the system that utilities use to credit solar energy system owners for the electricity produced by their solar panels. With net metering, you only pay for the electricity that you use beyond what your solar panels can generate. Net metering policies differ from state to state – from Massachusetts to California – so make sure to do your homework ahead of time.

Should one replace their roof before adding solar?

Solar energy systems can last for 25 to 35 years, and it can be costly to remove and reinstall them if you need to replace your roof. If your roof needs maintenance in the near term, you should complete it before you finish your solar installation.

Do solar panels work in a blackout?

If your solar panel system is connected to the grid, it will shut off in the event of a blackout. This is to prevent emergency responders and electricity utility repair-people from being injured by your panels sending power back to the grid. However, there are certain inverters you can buy that provide backup power in a blackout Should one replace their when paired with a battery.
